Our family is planning to vacation in southern Mexico the first week of Aug. We have to fly into Mexico City to get to Huatulco in Oaxaca state. What is the update on the Popo volcano? Concerned that if it erupts, people will be evacuated from Mexico City's environs and/or airport closed. Chances of that happening in your opinion? How is Mexico City doing today in this regard?

Hola Herme,

Lots of people have asked us this question, and I'm afraid we here at VolcanoWorld don't have the latest information. As you already know, there was at least one eruption during the past month or so that did indeed result in the temporary closing of the Mexico City airport. The specific information on Popocatepetl that is in VolcanoWorld is at: http://volcano.und.edu/vwdocs/current_volcs/popo/mar5popo.html It includes links to other organizations, namely at UNAM, where volcanologists are actually doing the monitoring work. Have a great vacation!

Sincerely,
Scott Rowland
