I live in Mexico City, and this morning as I cleaned the volcanic ash off my car from nearby Popocatepetl, I wondered if I should be taking precautions against breathing the ash and if I should prepare somehow to deal with future such events?

Hi Jeffrey Martin,

The best precautions are probably to purchase a few particle masks. The mask will make walking around outside more barable if there is another ashfall. The best thing to do would be to not be outside if ash starts falling but if you're caught unaware even just a moistened bandana would help. Of course then everybody looks like bandits!

Sincerely,
Scott Rowland
