I know this is a really trite question, but I'd appreciate some advice. I'm about to book a holiday in Mexico City for the end of Oct 97. Is this sensible or is there a chance of a major erruption.

I don't think anybody really knows if there will be a huge eruption or not. I think that the best guesses are that there will continue to be moderate-sized eruptions of Popocatepetl, and the effects on Mexico City will depend on the wind direction. I guess I wouldn't worry too much. If a threat really does develop then the authorities there will take appropriate measures. This doesn't hold for the slopes of the volcano itself, including the towns on the slopes. I would not suggest visiting them at the moment. Particularly if there is an eruption, the fewer people who have to be dealt with and evacuated, the better. Have a great vacation!
