Is the recent activity of Mt. Popo related to the recent activity of the West Indies peak? i.e. Are the two volcanos on the same plate boundary?

rocky Dawn

Hi Dawn,

No the two are not related (except that they are both volcanoes). They just happen to be erupting at the same time. At any one time there are usually 15-20 different volcanoes erupting although many of these aren't erupting very vigorously. Montserrat is on the subduction zone associated with subduction of the atlantic part of the south american plate under what I guess would be called the carribbean plate. Popocatepetl is associated with subduction of the Cocos plate under the north american plate.

Sincerely,
Scott Rowland
