I am researching Mt. Irazu in Costa Rico and I can't seem to find much information on it. Do you have any facts or plces to help me get this info?

rocky Lau

Hi Lau,

Irazu, Costa Rica Location: 9.9N, 83.8W Elevation: 11,257 Feet (3,432 m) Irazu is the highest volcano in Costa Rica. There have been at least 23 eruptions since 1723. The most recent was from 1963 to 1965. It sent tephra and secondary mudflows into cultivated areas, caused at least deaths, and destroyed 400 houses and some factories. That eruption had a maximum Volcanic Explosivity Index of 3. The Global Volcanism Project (http://www.volcano.si.edu/gvp/volcano/region14/costaric/irazu/gvnb.htm) was the source of this information and contains recent information about the volcano. If your Spanish is any good visit VOLCANES DE COSTA RICA (http://www.expreso.co.cr/cr/volcanes.htm). See also National Parks of Costa Rica (http://incostarica.net/docs/nationalparks/parks/irazuvolcano.shtml).

Sincerely,
Steve Mattox
