Why are there volcanoes in Mexico?

rocky Nancy

Hi Nancy,

Most of the volcanoes are the result of the subduction of oceanic crust (part of the Cocos Plate) under Mexico (part of the North American Plate). A few of the active volcanoes in northern mexico are related to extension that rifted Baja California away from the mainland.

Sincerely,
Steve Mattox
