I need to get some information on the volcano, El Chichon, which erupted in Mexico in 1982. General geologic information such as lava type or magma type is needed.

rocky Mark and Alisa Jaffe

Hi Mark and Alisa,

El Chichon is in the state of Chiapas, and prior to 1982 only fumaroles were reported from it. It is a small volcano surrounded by non-volcanic mountains, and the whole area is heavily forested (except where towns and fields are). The composition of the erupted pumice was trachy-andesite.

A good place to look for more details is a book called Global Volcanism 1975-1985, by Lindsey McClelland and others. It was published in 1989 by Prentice Hall, Englewood Cliffs, NJ, 07632.

Hopefully, if you check back on VolcanoWorld in a couple of months we will have a photo or two of El Chichon.

Happy volcano hunting!

Sincerely,

Scott Rowland, University of Hawaii
