Dear Meghan,
ACTIVITY OF VESUVIUS AND ETNA
This brief report is in part a response to a recent request by Roger J. Suthren who heard rumors about increased activity at Vesuvius volcano in Italy. I will visit the volcano in the second half of this week and may have more info then, but as far as I know at this moment, there are no unusual phenomena occurring. The only recent event of any importance was an earthquake felt in towns on the southern side of Vesuvius, mostly Boscotrecase, on the late evening of 26 April. There is no info available in what way that event may have been related with the volcan- ism of Vesuvius, so any interpretation about the earthquake being a sign of increased volcanic activ- ity remains speculative.
----------- There are a few home pages dealing with Vesuvius - you might try doing a world-wide-web search on "Vesuvius".
