Please can you give me info or guide me to info on extinct volcanoes, particularly those in Edinburgh , Scotland

rocky Paula

Hi Paula,

You are probably referring to the rocks back behind Holyrood Palace. Lion's Head and Haunch are volcanic necks. Salisbury Crags are a sill. There are also basalt lava flows in that area. These rocks are all Carboniferous in age (about 330 million years). You might want to find the books listed below. Craig, G.Y., 1991, Geology of Scotland: The Geological Society, London. Bell, B.R., and Harris, J.W., 1986, An Excursion Guide to the Geology of the Isle of Skye: Geological Society of Glasgow.

Sincerely,
Steve Mattox
