JaneI don't think that Vesuvius is particularly unique other than the fact that Italy doesn't have a huge number of volcanoes, and Vesuvius is one of them. Otherwise it is a pretty typical strato-volcano. It probably isn't under much threat either, at least not as a volcano. Almost certainly there are rare plants and animals that are threatened by the increasing human population but the volcano itself is safe. Whether the people are safe from the volcano is another story!
Sincerely,
Scott Rowland
