Is Iron Hill in Newark, Delaware, a remnant of an old volcano? If not, what is the closest volcano (active or dormant) to Delaware?

rocky Maureen Joyce

Dear Maureen,

I could not find specific information on Iron Hill. It could certainly be the erosional remnant of a volcano or volcanic deposit.

The nearest active volcano to Delaware is Saba in the West Indies (go to the Virgin Islands and make a left). It erupted sometime before 1636 but not since. If you go please send us a photo (and beach report).
