Is there any place west of the Mississippi river that has no past history of volcanoes. I am trying to find a place that is safe from any ancient or recent volcanic activity. North Dakota has very few earthquakes that I can find in it's recent past.

Hi Mrs. Johnson,

The book "Volcanoes of North America" by Charles Wood and Jurgen Keinle, lists all the recent activity in the continent (but not counting Mexico). They have volcanoes listed in Washington, Oregon, California, Idaho, Nevada, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico. I guess whatever remaining states there are that are west of the Mississippi but not on that list will be considered non-volcanic. This will be a test of my geography so I'd better get a map...

And the winners are: Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska.

Sincerely,

Scott Rowland
