July 14, 1995, I heard of volcanic activity near our town. I live in Fresno California near Mammoth Lakes. My question concerns the activity around Mammoth Lakes. What type of lava would come from it (basalt, or andesite, or Rhilolite?) The news reported of volcanic gas leaking from the earth in this area. Could this be a result of our extremely wet winter (we had 220% of the norm for snow fall in the mountains)? Any answers would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Jay,

I am going to dodge your question and tell you where you can get better first-hand information. There is a Long Valley Caldera home page run by the U.S. Geological Survey. The address is: http://quake.wr.usgs.gov/VOLCANOES/LongValley/

If what you need to know isn't there please don't hesitate to ask me again.

Sincerely,

Scott Rowland, University of Hawaii
