Hi Robert,
First off, I can tell you that hopefully soon there will be some photos
of El Chichon in VolcanoWorld. Probably the best place to start looking
would be a book called "Global Volcanism 1975-1985" edited by Lindsay
McClelland, Tom Simkin, Marj Summers, Elizabeth Nielsen, and Thomas
Stein. This is a collection of the monthly bulletins of the Global
Volcanism Network for those years, which happen to include both the El
Chichon and Nevado del Ruiz eruptions. In the process of reporting what
went on during the eruptions they also manage to present some background
material about the two volcanoes.
If that doesn't give you a good start please write back again.
