I just recently heard of that a very large pool of magma sits beneath Mammonth Lake , California. If an eruption occured here what would be the result, in your opinion? I have heard that a volcanic eruption at this location could result in a major catastrophe that would envelop the world.

Hi Matt,

Well, there may or may not be a huge pool of magma down there. Certainly the fact that there is a huge caldera in the area (Long Valley caldera), and the fact that there are extensive ash deposits extending away from the caldera for hundreds of kilometers, tells you that in the past there have been huge eruptions from presumably huge magma chambers. I think the jury is still out regarding the present situation, however. If you want to learn more, from folks who are really studying the area, check out the Long Valley home page here.

Good luck on your quest.
