Can a volcano ever form in Rhode Island?

rocky Jason Jones

Jason,

I used to live in Rhode Island; I think a volcano would make the place a lot more interesting! But it is very unlikely that a volcano will ever form there - at least not for millions of years. Volcanoes typically form near where large plates collide or separate, and Rhode island is not near a plate boundary. So if you want to visit a volcano you will have to go to Iceland or the West Indies or to the western USA. Thanks for your question!
