I heard recently that Mammoth Mountain was starting to show signs of a dome working its way to the surface. I also heard that this would be a grandaddy eruption that would break eardrums in New York city. Do you have any insight on this?

Dear Joneses,

The surface of part of the Long Valley caldera has been doming upward gradually for some time. I do not believe any material is working its way to the surface. Have a look at Current Activty and Eruptions. You are correct that past eruption at Long Valley caldera were very large. Future eruptions might also be large but the recent flurry of earthquakes is nothing to be concerned about. New York will be a safe distance to watch and listen from ... someday.
