This summer I travelled through northeast New Mexico and visited an old volcanic cinder cone. I would like some information on this volcanic region and could you tell me where to look for more information.

Dear Claire,

I guess you were traveling through the Raton-Clayton volcanic field. It contains about 125 cinder cones. The cones range in age from greater than a million to a few thousand years old. Some of the cones are associated with lava flows. The youngest cone, Capulin, is also a national monument. Perhaps you stopped there. There is detailed information about the volcanoes of New Mexico in Wood and Kienle.
