I am working on a television documentary on the Andes region. I would like to know which of the volcanos in Ecuador and Colombia is the most active, and would be the most dramatic to film. Also, I am interested in finding out if there is any research going on in the region using GPS or other methods, to try and predict the occurence of seismic activity/volcanic eruptions in this highly seismic region. I heard about something near Popayan in Colombia, connected to INGEOMINAS, the Colombian Geological Survey, but that is as far as I've gotten.

Catherine - Sangay volcano in Ecudor is constantly in eruption, but difficult of access - airplane fly overs are possible. Pete Hall is a volcanologist in Ecuador who just completed a 2 week visit to Sangay (and knows N Andean volcanoes intimately). You should contact him about opportunities, costs, safety, etc. Good luck!
