Since 1914, has there been an increase in volcano eruptions, and if so what are the statistics ?

rocky Jacquelyn

Dear Jacquelyn,

Sorry for the delay in answering your question.

In about 1914, about 35 volcanoes were known to be active each year. By 1990 that number had grown to 50. This does not reflect a global increase in volcanic activity. The numbers closely parallel the growth in the number of known volcanoes and global population. I think we are more knowledgeable and aware of volcanoes than people were in 1914. The same would be true if we looked at the number of eruptions. The statistics for eruptions in available in Volcanoes of the World.
