Has anyone ever tried to live in a volcano?

rocky Frank

Hi Frank,

Well, I don't think anyone has tried to live in a really active volcano. There are lots of volcanoes that have long periods of time between eruptions and often people will be living within the boundaries of the volcano without realizing that it is a volcano. Many large calderas fit in this category. For example, Yellowstone is a large caldera, as is Taupo in New Zealand. Lots of people live in both places. Recently, a volcano called Fogo in the Cape Verde Islands has become active. It consists of a large caldera where lots of people live. None of them is living in the actual active vent, but they could be said to be living "in" the volcano.

I hope this helps to answer your question.

Sincerely,

Scott Rowland, University of Hawaii
