A volcano can shot ash as high as 30 miles (50 km) into the atmosphere. That estimate is for the eruption of Taupo in New Zealand in 186 AD. The AD 79 eruption of Vesuvius was about half as high. The 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens shot ash 11 miles (18 km) high.
