About how many people have been killed by volcanoes?
Brandon Fuller
Hi Brandon,
In his book "Volcanic Hazards", Dr. Russel Blong provides a table that
lists volcanic deaths by region around the world. The world total as of
1984 when the book was published, was 233,867.
A more recent compilation is in "Volcanoes of the World" by Tom
Simkin andLee Seibert. Counting through their compilation, since 1985, 25,830
people have been killed by or on volcanoes. 89% of these were killed on
Nevado del Ruiz (Colombia) in 1985.
Sincerely,
Scott Rowland
