I have a student doing a report on Kilauea and she has been unable to find out the significance/meaning of the name. Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Randy,

The english translation is "spewing", probably a reference either to the numerous steaming vents or perhaps to active eruptions. There is also a Kilauea on Kaua'i where waves break and the wind carries them vertically up the cliff so that they also "spew".

Sincerely,
