Lava has to somehow get from the vent to the front of the
flow. There are two main types of "lava transport mechanisms",
channels and tubes. It is important to remember that both of these
form within the flow as it advances. Only occasionally have lava
flows been observed to re-occupy pre-existing tubes and channels.
