Suggested Activities by Jane Kurtz
- See if you can find out something about the stories that the Klickitats and Cowlitz told about how Mount St. Helens came
to be.
- Make up a story about Rocky's travel in time back to Pompeii during the eruption that buried the city. Did he find his
roots there? Or come up with your own idea of a Rocky story about a travel to another volcano.
- See if you can discover why scientists now think the legend of Atlantis, the magnificant island that disappeared under
the sea, is linked to volcanoes.
- After you read the Inca story and see the link between Inca gold and volcanoes, try to figure out the link between the
California gold rush and volcanoes. And what's the link between silver and volcanoes? Diamonds and volcanoes?
- What parts of the Rocky stories could be true? What parts are obviously fiction? Make a list of each.
- The Inca empire included Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, and some of Chile and Argentina. Draw a map of the area. Find some
pictures of present day volcanoes, including some here on VolcanoWorld.
- Can you find a picture of how the Incas saw some of their gods--the Thunder God, for instance, or the Moon Goddess?
Look at The Incas by Tim Wood (Viking, 1996) to see scenes of daily Inca life.
