From the depths of the earth, a hot
stream flows from the lava dome inside the crater of Mount St. Helens.
It reaches the surface near the
boiling temperature. Water samples reveal the presence of a unique
bacteria called Archeobacteria.
Archeobacteria are in a Kingdom all
by themselves.
These hardy bugs use energy sources
from magma, or molten rock, in the form of sulfur, carbon dioxide, and
hydrogen. They have been found in volcanic areas around the world,
including deep oceanic trenches.
It is thought that they are related
to the first forms of life on Earth.
