Left Photo: The young volcanic cone of Vulcao dos Capenlinhos, on the outer
west point of Fayal, suffers enormously from erosion caused by the Atlantic
Ocean and the powerful winds. The coastline is strengthened by basalt blocks.
Right Photo: A sign commemorating the burnt lighthouse at Vulcao dos Capelinhos
that survived the eruption in 1957-1958. The first floor is buried in volcanic ash. The
volcano enlarged the Island of Fayal westwards.
