Volcanoes of the island of Terceira based on Neumann van Padang and others
(1967).
Terceira, an island made of stratovolcanoes and calderas, has had two historic eruptions. In 1761, lava erupted from a regional fissure east of Santa Barbara and caused some damage. This eruption was Strombolian in type. Santa Barbara is a stratovolcano with a summit caldera. The 1867 eruption was from a submarine vent west of the island. It produced large explosions, emitting water jets, gases, and cinders. Guilherme Moniz is a central cone capped by a 2 mile (3 km) wide caldera. The Agualua lava dome is on the north rim of the caldera. Solfataras have been active at the volcano since the 15th century.
