Landslide

The Nuuanu landslide covers an area of 8,900 square miles (23,000 square km) north of the island of Oahu. The slide removed much of the north half of the Koolau volcano. Individual blocks are as long as 35 miles (60 km). The Wailau landslide removed much of the north flank of the Wailau volcano of Molokai. Giant landslides are part of the evolution of most Hawaiian volcanoes. This GLORIA side-scan sonar image is courtesy of the U.S. Geological Survey.
