Daisetsu, Hokkaido's tallest volcano, is made of overlapping
stratovolcanoes, including Asahi-dake, the most recently active vent. A
single historic eruption in 1400 was dated by tephrochronology. It was
moderate in size (VEI=2) and explosive. Photograph of Asahi-dake and
fumerole fields courtesy of Mike Lyvers.
