This picture of Sangay was taken in the summer of 1990. Jamies Burton,the photographer, was studying archaeological sites in the vicinity where the people used ash from Sangay to temper their clay pots. The photo shows an ash cloud coming from the summit of Sangay as viewed from the village of Macas in the Morona-Santiago Province of Ecuador.

Sangay is a continually active stratovolcano of Central Equador. It is known for its explosive venting thick clouds of ash every 10 minutes and had built a dome since 1976.
