A view from on top of a pahoehoe lava flow towards a short section of highway that was left uncovered. In the distance is another arm of the flow. The initial flows are only about 1 meter thick. After they are emplaced, inflation beneath a solid crust builds them to 5-10 m thick. (November 1994)
