Pu'u 'O'o viewed from uprift. The main plume is emanating from the far side of the cone in this view. The green area in the foreground is called a kipuka, an area where an older surface has been surrounded by younger lava. Falling cinder during the episodic PuTu 'O'o eruptions of 1983-1986 covered the younger lava and killed the trees by stripping their leaves off. Ferns and small trees have started to re-sprout within the kipuka. (June 1990)
