Kaho'olawe as viewed from Maui. This illustrates the classical shape of a Hawaiian shield volcano with gradual slopes. These slopes are so gradual because Hawaiian lavas have low viscosities and come out at high eruption rates; they flow rapidly downhill and cannot build steep slopes. (April 1992)
