Mauna Loa viewed from near the summit of Mauna Kea. The slope to the left is the profile of the northeast rift zone. You can follow the many hundreds of lava flows that have originated from the rift and flowed towards the saddle between Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea. Some of these flows pool in the saddle and flow either to the left towards Hilo, or to the right towards north Kona. You can also see the caldera at the summit. The cloud is just a cloud, not an eruption. In the foreground are Mauna Kea cinder cones. (June 1993)
