Mauna Kea

Mauna Kea catching the morning sunlight as viewed from Hilo. The bumps in the profile are large cinder cones. Mauna Kea last erupted about 3000 years ago, and most of its slopes have developed thick soils; the slopes you see are planted in sugar cane. Most of Hilo sits on a 1400 year-old lava flow from Mauna Loa (out of view to the left). (January 1985)
