The beginning of a Pu'u 'O'o fountaining episode usually consisted of a low dome fountain (as seen here) that gradually grew as more gas-rich magma was erupted. Note how jagged the PuTu 'O'o cone is, due to the slumping that has occurred during the ~1 month since the last fountaining episode. The foreground consists of 'a'a flows from previous episodes.
