The start of a Pu'u 'O'o episode usually consisted of a low dome fountain and a complexly braided set of lava flows. Here the fountain is barely visible. Most of the foreground consists of 'a'a flows from previous episodes. To the right is a small patch of cinder that has not been covered by 'a'a. Note how much higher the downwind part of the cone (to the left of the vent) is compared to the upwind side (to the right of the vent). (September 1985)
