Field of Boulders

A field of boulders near Halema'uma'u pit crater within the Kilauea caldera. These dense angular boulders were thrown out during violent phreatic (steam) explosions in 1924. In that eruption the column of lava within Halema'uma'u dropped suddenly as magma was emplaced into the flank of the volcano. This allowed groundwater access to very hot rocks, generating the steam for the explosions. No new magma was erupted, only these blocks ripped from the deeper layers of the volcano. (July 1992)
