A small channel formed within a pahoehoe toe. The lava is flowing from right to left. The narrow part of the channel is a few cm across and downflow it is closer to 20 cm wide. The lava forms a skin as it flows and parts of the skin accrete to the channel edges to form the layered pattern. (March 1990)
