Olivine phenocrysts and vesicles in a Hawaiian lava flow. The vesicles are solidified gas bubbles. The phenocrysts are crystals that start forming before the lava erupts and therefore have a head start. The rest of the lava is formed of crystals also, but they are too small to see with the naked eye.
