Popocateptl

More Information

This is a photograph from about 4000 m up on the north flank of Popocateptl, looking out to the east. In the foreground are slopes of ash with a few outcrops of lava. In the distance are two more volcanoes, Nauchampateptl (left) and Citlatepetl (right) also known as Pico de Orizaba. The haze is air pollution that has drifted all the way from Mexico City, 100 km away!

This is a view of Popocateptl from the northwest. The active crater, where the 1995 eruptions took place, is out of view on the other side of the summit in this view. The cloud is just a cloud, not an eruption. Popocateptl is a popular place for hiking and climbing.
