Making a Rock Collection (Grades K-12)
Many of the rocks listed in figure 7 can be collected during trips
on the Island of Hawaii and the other islands. Easton and Easton (1987)
and Hazlett (1990) provide detailed descriptions of the geology of the
islands. These guides describe localities where rocks can be collected.
Teachers can collect hand samples on their own or make stops during class
outings. Please protect the natural resources in Hawaii Volcanoes
National Park by collecting samples outside the park boundary.
