Volcano Monitoring Techniques
Lesson at a glance: Geologists use several methods to
monitor changes in a volcano. These methods assist in forecasting
intrusions and eruptions. The methods are introduced in the Background,
and examples are provided in the Teaching Suggestions.
Key Concepts: Ground movements, seismicity, gas
geochemistry, and geology are methods used to monitor active volcanoes.
Lesson Outcomes: The students will:
- realize that eruptions have precursor activities
- recognize patterns in volcano behavior
- interpret graphical data
