Making Observations

Making Observations

Here two geologists are making observations of two lava flows that are active at the same time. The flow in the background is 'a'a, and you can see that it is a couple meters thick and covered by broken fragments of solid lava. The flow in the foreground is pahoehoe, has a much smoother surface, and is only 20-30 cm thick. The geologists are standing on a pre-existing 'a'a flow and had to move shortly after this photo was taken! For heat protection they are wearing nomex flight suits. One has a reflective hood and the other is wearing a knitted balaclava; neither is very comfortable or particularly good for seeing where you are walking.
