This is geologist Vince Realmuto out on the Mauna Iki flow of 1919-1920.
Much of what we know about volcanoes comes from studying old and
non-active features. He is well-equipped to take notes and photographs,
and to note down his observations. Even though he is not planning to
encounter active lava he is wearing protective clothing such as gloves,
long pants, and boots. These were well-warranted this time; the small
hole he is standing in (yellow outline) is a collapsed portion of shelly
pahoehoe that broke under his weight. Fortunately he didn't fall over but
if he had, the gloves and jeans would have prevented him from being cut by
the razor-sharp glassy lava.
