Observatorio Vesuviano monitors Italian volcanoes using geochemical surveillance (radon in water wells; gas species determinations; isotopic analyses; continuous monitoring of H2, CO2, Rn and He, and gas flux measurement in soils), ground deformation (levelling routes, horizontal deformations, clinometry, tide-gauges, precision gravity), seismology, and marine surveys (sea bottom gravity surveys and a buoy installed in Pozzuoli Bay to check the bradyseismic phenomenon). Photographs of Stromboli erupting in early May, 1993 copyrighted and provided by Steve O'Meara of Volcano Watch International.
Volcanoes monitored by the observatory include Vesuvius, Campi Flegrei caldera, Ischia, Etna, Vulcano, Pantelle ria, Campanian plain, Stromboli, and the Eolian archipelago.
For details about the monitoring equipment used by the observatory and how it is deployed visit the WOVO Directory.
Vesuvius is a Decade Volcano under a project which began as part of the International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction (IDNDR).
