Victoria University cooperates in a surveillance program on White Island volcano. The only permanent instrument on the island is a seismometer, data from which is telemetered to the Rotorua office, NZ Geological Survey. Surveillance visits are made at 3-6 monthly intervals (depending on activity) and during the approximately 6 hours spent on the island at each visit level and magnetic surveys are completed of the crater floor, temperatures are measured and gas is collected from the fumaroles (by either Dr. W.F. Giggenbach or Dr. D. Shephard, Chemistry Division, DSIR). Results are included in an immediate report distributed to all interested parties and summaries published in the New Zealand Volcanological Record - compiled annually by NZ Geological Survey.
