Geographical Survey Institute, Ibaraki, Japan
The Geographical Survey Institute is a central organization of surveying and
mapping and conducts the
establishment of geodetic control network and production of national basic
maps.
The Crustal Dynamics, Topographic and Geographic Departments are engaged in
several
kinds of works related to the prediction of volcanic eruptions. The Izu-Oshima
Volcano Observatory
(OVO)
has
been in operation since 1984.
Details of the activities of the institute are as follows:
- 12 volcanoes designated as "Active volcanoes which should be intensively
observed and
investigated": Geodetic surveys such as levellings, distance measurements,
gravity and GPS surveys in
Izu-Oshima and other volcanoes. Measurements of the distribution of surface
temperature (if necessary).
- 23 volcanoes designated as "Active volcanoes and volcanoes which have
potential to
explode": Geodetic surveys, including GPS survey, and measurements of the
distribution of surface
temperature in volcanoes suspected of eruption.
- Other volcanoes: Surveillance by emergency survey team.
- Production of topographic maps and others: Volcano basic maps of Unzen and
other volcanoes and volcano land use map of Sakurajima volcano have already
been produced as the basic data for the prediction of volcanic eruption.
Unzen is a Decade Volcano under a program which began as part of the
International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction (IDNDR).
